Pornography’s Impact on the Brain

Current trends in pornography use are certainly different than they were several years ago. Recent advances in neuroscience research has allowed us to look at how pornography may impact the brain after prolonged use.  There are numerous studies that suggest that prolonged pornography use can impact gray matter volume in the brain, connectivity between the emotional (Limbic) brain and the left prefrontal cortex (LPFC).  (Stark et. al, 2018). This data can be very alarming to those who struggle with Problematic Pornography Use (PPU) as well as to their loved ones, as it should be. However, research shows that as an individual can reduce his anxiety about relapsing into pornography, his success at staying sober increase (See Dr. Michael Twohig’s 2016 study. Utah State University).

At the IRATAD, we employ a number of neuroscience and mindfulness-based interventions to help clients reduce their anxiety as well as their acting out behaviors and hence increase their sobriety.  We have a number of tools and interventions that have been developed over time to help one achieve success.
